do NOT go with digital phone service. There is no reason to pay for that, because it is the same as VOIP. If the internet goes down, do does your telephone. With POTS telephone service by GTE/Verizon or Sprint/MCI or PacBell/AT&T/Bell South/Mountain Bell/SBC, you will always have reliable telephone service. No echoes or fuzzy signals.

But overll, it isn't really worth the cost. Unless you live in a place that doesn't get cell phone coverage, why don't you just get Cingular or T-Mobile and forget the landline altogether?

Go to www.uswitch.com and compare providers. This site gives honest, fair and up-to-date comparisons.
You will be asked for details like postcode, method of payment, type of calls you usually make. The sire will then offer you a list of providers who can give you the service you want. You can then compare their prices and customer service.
Don't assume the first on the list is best for you, but you will at least get a good selection of providers who meet your needs.
Don't use this website to contact the provider you choose, just call them directly and get your landline.
You need to choose your provider based on your needs, not on what other people think as their phone usage may be very different to yours.

AT&T is definetly the best and most reliable. They have been around forever. They own and maintain 99% of the underground cable from the central office out to the subscriber.
They also own Cingular Wireless (cell phone) which is great with the carryover minutes.

I have MCI and I love them!

The pricing ranges from a 200 minute plan for $31.00 to an unlimited plan for $49.99.

The plans include local, local toll and unlimited calls, as well as voice mail, caller ID, call waiting, call waiting ID, speed dial and a few other services (I don't use them, so I don't know what they are).

Their voice mail is unique for two reasons: first, it will tell you the number that shows up on your caller ID ("Call from 310-555-3421) and you can receive an email when you get a voice mail. I have mine set up to email me at work and to my cell phone (as a text message).

Customer Service is outsourced to the Philippines, and they are actually quite helpful. The few times I have had a problem on my bill, they gave me a full credit for the entire month. They bend over backwards to make their customers happy.

well you have a few diffrent options really it depends on where you live. if you live near a city that i would suggest go with a digital phone service like through the cable company or if you live a little far out that you would want to get whom ever is covering that area. like at my house i live so far in the country i have no choice. i only have one carrier in this area.. maybe you can repost your question with a lil more detail

nearly all UK phone companies buy their services from BT and then sell them back on to you. So why not go to BT direct?

They own and maintain the national netword and are about to make the UK network the best in the world.

There's very little difference between the domestic suppliers, so why not go straight to BT.

Check their website for the various packages (www.bt.com)
