Depends on what kind of wedding it will be (Fancy or casual), and how much you want to spend. If the reception is real laid back and informal, a barbecue would be nice (although a bit unconventional). If it will be more formal and traditional, finger sandwiches, cold cuts, cheeses, vegetables, and fruit trays would do.

First of all this is a great idea, espically if the reception is not formal. I went to one of thes and it was the best wedding I was ever at. I hate them ever since I quit drinking. But my wife and kids are more important than a few beers. Anyway, keep it light.. Fried chicken, chicken wings, a few kinds, cold cuts and rools, pizza. If it is a bit more on the reserved side. Do the chicken or Beef thing, ya can't go wrong. But hey, I am a guy. My wedding was a cart before the horse type deal. Which turned into a 250 plus guest huha.... I just sat back and said yes. Actually I was up in Canada Fishing Until 2 days before the wedding and almost got arrested at my Bachlor party... Those were the days.. But 11 years later and another kid and we are one happy family.. The most important thing to remember that being married and having a family is going to be one of the toughest, trying things in your life, espically when the kids come.. Somtimes it will seem like pure hell.. But for all that agrevation there are going to be some very special tender loving moments that make up for every ounce of misery. Learn to see this and you will be fine. Don't expect a movie romance and happily ever after. Learn trust and unlearn jealousy. Be faithful and make your man feel special. If he is not doing the same, Then tell him, we are not mind readers and somtimes the world gets in the way.. Don't let that happen. The food will be fine.. God Bless Both Of you..

We had an outdoor summer wedding. It was great. The caterer served stuff like potato salad, steaks, chicken, cole slaw, three bean salad, etc. It worked out fine. The food was good.

Dont go with things that spoil easily, no mayonaised based items.
Cold appetizers can be refreashing in warm weather like trays of passed bruchetta or spoons that are filled with Gazpacho (cold tomoato based soup).

Entrees can include freash seasonal summer vegitables and great catches of freash fish. Grilled items always give that summer feel with out being to "back yard BBQ"

great guests with fruit water (pitchers filled with water, freash strawberried, lime etc) and lemonade.

Celebrate the bounty of the season by filling your menu with fresh fruits such as watermelon, and berries, and fresh vegetables such as corn. Between courses, or as an additional dessert, offer refreshing granitas and sorbets. An elegant summer wedding menu could include a bevy of fresh seafood, including lobster and oysters. For a more casual affair, consider a backyard barbecue, or traditional picnic food including potato salad.

Think cool.. but easy to keep cool to stave off bacteria and bad stuff.. go with salads and cold shrimp, if you want a sit down meal go with chicken ..if you are going buffet style you could do chicken or coldcuts .. lots of fruit.. typically people do not want hot heavy food in teh summer.. so think light, refreshing and simple! Good luck!
