It was Rocky Marciano, the only heavyweight fighter in history to end undefeated, with a perfect 49 - 0 record, and 43 KOs.

Rocky’s strategy was always to try and knock out his opponent; he was not prepared to let the decision go to the judges. This stemmed from his days as an amateur when he unfairly lost a fight on points to Coley Wallace despite being the aggressor for the entire bout. And besides, as Rocky said, "why waltz 10 rounds with an opponent if you can KO him in one?"

Yet what Rocky did possess was what the veteran boxing commentator Harry Carpenter described as the “cruellest, crudest pair of fists in the business”, fists which knocked out 43 of his 49 opponents. Nicknamed Suzy Q, his right hook was scientifically proven to pack more explosive energy than an armour-piercing bullet. Just ask Archie Moore, who said he felt like he had been "beaten all over the upper body with a blackjack or hit with rocks".

Yet to go for the knockout from the first bell Rocky would always leave himself open to being hit in return. It was fortunate therefore that he had both the body and the courage to withstand so much punishment. A highly-conditioned physique was something Rocky insisted upon from his very first amatuer fight. In that fight against Harry Lester, Rocky was embarrassingly disqualified for putting out his leg to block a punch - because he was so tired. From that moment on, Rocky trained everyday and would spar up to 200 rounds in the weeks running up to his fights.

Not only did Rocky ensure he had the physical advantage to win his bouts, he also twisted every rule in the book. He hit borderline low-blows, he butted opponents and against Britain’s Don Cockell in 1955 he even hit him at the conclusion of the rounds, after the bell had gone. Yet at the end of those fights he would ask after his opponents, making sure they were OK and not hurt too badly. Carpenter described such actions as being “like a man who brings you flowers after running you down in his car”.
