Time for a party! I potty trained 2 boys like this. Around age 3, we got rid of diapers and said he is a big boy, time for big boy underwear. No pull ups (too much like diapers). Every time there was a pee pee or poo, we had a party! We sang pee pee songs and everyone in the family was in on the party!! WOOO HOOOO ____ went to pee pee!!! WOOP WOOP!!! Even did a little pee pee dance!
For the times they went in their underwear, a sad look on your face and saying how disappointed you are that he went in his big boy underwear. It takes patience and consistency, but you have to show it is a GOOD thing to go in the potty and a bad thing to go in the underwear. No punishment for accidents though! Good luck!

My son who is four 1/2 just got potty trained a couple of months ago. We needed to wait until he was ready. We let him devise a plan of how he wanted to do it. He chose big boy underwear. He just got up one day and decided that he wanted to be a big boy. I bribed him to begin with (The only thing that could make him go were quarters which got expensive), but the best advice is to include him on the plan. He is old enough now to give you some input. Please don't feel like it is your fault or listen to the people who can give you nasty feedback. Every child is an individual and needs to go at their own pace. Pull-ups did not help us at all. He chose to go right to wearing underwear, day and night. One advantage of waiting so long is that the late-trainers usually potty-train day and night at the same time.

I use to nanny for a set of triplet. the mother was great but she had a hard time with they potty training also.
She would brib them with candy. every time they would go potty or poop in the toilet they would get a small treat ( a snack size candy for example)
at first I didnt think this would work but it actually did.
this was the only time they got candy or sweets, thats how she made it work.
one of them would go all throughout the day and sometimes force herself to pee to get the candy
the other two went when they needed
its really what works best for you and your son

If he is not already in regular underwear, put him in it. Let him find out what it feels like to be soiled - most kids hate this and figure it out pretty quickly. This will be a big pain in the butt at the outset, but it's the fastest way. If he still protests, take away some of his favorite things - not just toys and treats, but activities that he likes too. Tell him these things will not be coming back until he learns to potty like a big boy, and stick to it.

Barring any physical reasons your doctor can rule out, there is no reason why a 4 year old should still be in diapers. It's time to lay down the law. Tell him he is 4 and a big boy and will no longer be wearing diapers or pull-ups. Tell him in no uncertain, very simple terms that he will start using the potty when he needs to pee or poop, and if he has an accident it is his responsibility to clean himself up. Keep in mind he is only a 4 year old, so he may not do a great job--the key is to have him take responsibility for his actions. My son had one pooping episode in his pants, so I took him to the bathroom, put him in the tub, gave him a washcloth and told him to clean himself. It has never happened again.
The most important thing here is that you stand firm and not give in. Good luck! You can do it.

The Pull Ups are too much like a diaper. Once I put mine in regular underwear, potty training was a breeze.

Don't let him wear pants. When he has a BM, that'll change his mind! That's how my Mom did it with 3 kids.
My cousin brought over another kid who WAS potty trained and fawned all over him and gave him treats until her son was so jealous that he DEMANDED to use the potty.
Dr. Phil has a good book on potty training I think.

Have party hats, cupcakes, EVERYTHING, the works, as much as you can put time and effort into.
When he goes, have a party!
(that's how I got my son to go #2, he was resistant for awhile too)... the drawback is that once they're going regular, they want a "potty party" every time!
