I'm not talking about the fact that you go to jail for short sentences and awaiting trial and prison for longer sentences.

Want to know if there is much difference for inmates between the 2. All I really know is about county jail where I did 6 months that seemed to last forever. I've not been in prison but that might happen if things work out bad.

Some people in county said state was better as you weren't locked up as much, better programmes, better food, more visits etc. but I think county would be easier as people just want to get through it and get out without causing too much trouble.

County jails usually hold people who are awaiting trial, or who have been sentenced to less than 1 year in prison; state prisons hold all persons convicted of offenses which carry more than a year sentence. State prisons usually have better programs, but only because the people serving time there have more time to participate in them.

County jails are utilized when an offender has to serve less than 24 months; anything over 23 months is a state prison sentence in my state. In my experience, my offenders have said county was worse because they are in lock down longer, can't smoke, and they hate it. State isn't that much better but I guess if you are there for 5 years you learn to make it home.

I know a person that has spend time in both places, due to alcoholism. His take on it is, he rather be in the prison, versus the jail. Neither one is a good place to be but he said prison is cleaner, visitation was better, food is bad no matter which place your in. He stated after being locked up for 2 years that if he had to spend life in prison he would, without a doubt, prefer the death penalty. His thoughts are the death penalty is the easy way out.
He waited for quite awhile before a job opened up for him in prison. There is a waiting list. He said work looks good, no matter what the job, compared to sitting in a cell all day.

County is where you are headed when you are first arrested and tried. Once you get convicted in court, you head up to state prison.
