An individual could try to find a physician to assist in their own suicide, but it's not going to be legal in a lot of places.

My wife and her three brothers suffer from myotonic muscular dystrophy, and according to them that's bad enough even though they all still have most of their mobility -- they can all walk and move fairly normally but have poor balance and trouble gripping things. I can only imagine how terrible it must be for someone with Duchenne's, and I would certainly understand if they wanted to do an assisted suicide. But euthanizing someone? Last I checked, euthanization meant taking someone's life without their consent...I would NEVER agree with that.

Genetics....... and please find a cure. I worked in ER and had to do CPR on a 23 yr old my son went to school with. His father was a special ED teacher that helped my son many years. He came to us in Cardiac Arrest and we got him back, lost him , got him back, lost him during the over 1 hour long code. So tragic a loss. As a nurse I don't cry over Codes and people who die usually, because it becomes a fact of life, that dying is a part of the cycle of life. This particular handsome young man, in my knowing his struggles, and that of his devoted parents who had even fought the school system, for a wheelchair ramp to the stage at the school auditorium. Knowing how great and kind this kid was and what a blessing he had been, I cried and cried when we couldnt save him and begged him to live during the code outloud. I know where you are coming from brother. Obviously you have been affected by this genetic disease somewhere also in your life to want to be involved with this illness. Many other areas of medicine work to support the many body systems involved with the disease such as Orthopedics, Cardiology and Pulmonology. But it is Genetic Research and fixing those damaged genes that will ultimately help all the kids with this disease. Good luck!

Euthanasia is a very controversial and delicate topic. Many people are suffering from diseases caused by genetic factors or by cancer... sometimes they get better, sometimes they do not.

By definition, euthanasia is killing a person by his/her own permission (usually given when the person is in great pain and in despair), or by the person's own family (when the person is unconscious, in a coma, or clinically brain-dead).

I think that euthanasia should not be carried out in most cases, except where if nature had to take its course, the person would surely pass away. Here i'm talking about clinically dead people who remain attached to life-support machines although there is no hope that their situation could ever improve. Also in the case of extremely weak babies who are also on life-support machines, dying, are constantly suffering and (if they actually had to live) would remain in great pain for the rest of their life and undoubtedly severely disabled.

Going back to your reference to Ducenne Muscular Dystrophy, I don't think that someone could be euthanised as easily as that. It is probable that they would not be euthanised at all, although if you are interested in the legal implications of this always check with a professional rather than taking my word for it!

I think it also depends on the patient's situation, whether they are unconsious or not, the degree of severity of the disease etc..

In the case of a patient who is hovering between life and death, is on a life-support system, is living in great pain, and has no way of improving their situation...I think nature should take its course in this case. But that, ofcourse, is my opinion...

Hope this was useful...

People are not euthanized in general they are doped up to make them more comfortable. Not knowing the condition of the person and not wanting to seem unkind the best I can do is mention a book on muscles, pain and referred pain called The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. Hoping it helps.
