I agree with you that running or exercising inside a gym sucks and doing it outside is only natural. Runyon canyon is an amazing place where there are great views as well as a good terrain. If you want to see the beaty of the city of Los Angeles and the beauty of it's nature then you have to go to Runyon Canyon, it is also probably the most peaceful place in L.A. as well. Another great place where thousands of runners go is on San Vincete Road is Santa Monica on the greenbelt. There are always runners there and you can meet and see so many new people. It might be a few miles away from hollywood or L.A. but its less than 15 min. on the freeway and you can just park you car on one of the side streets because they don't have parking meters. You should also park neer the end on San Vincete near the ocean because you can get a chance to walk up or down the famous Santa Monica stairs if its not too crowded.

Griffith Park, anywhere from Travel Town to Riverside Drive.
Lake Hollywood, in the hills. It's very peaceful there, and there's a trail around the reservoir.
Do you want a REAL workout? Try going from the Observatory to the top of Mount Hollywood. Great workout, and the views make it worthwhile.

There are a lot of cool trails in Griffith Park. You can take the subway to Vermont/Sunset or Hollywood/Western and walk north to the park. The Mt. Hollywood Trail is great for hiking and will give you an awesome workout if you run it.
