I've been out there 4 or 5 times in the past 2 years and fell in love. I've done a lot of research but am still unsure how much to save. I'd like to move my belongings but it equals about 500sq ft and a car (Ideally, I'd like my stuff to go cross country and me board a plane). I've been trying to job search in the IT field..but am having a hard time even getting a lead due to the fact that I'm presently 3000 miles away.. Any advice?

I think renting a u-haul and towing the car would probably be the cheapest option.

IT jobs shouldn't be to hard to find. There's supposed to be a big demand for them.

As for savings, rent is obscenely overpriced here. The average one=bedroom apt runs around $1000 a month. So figure first and security deposit, minimum That and car insurance and gas will cost you. Utilities and food should be a little cheaper than Baahs-ton. (You will get ribbed for your accent. We mean well, though.)

Wrap your mind around the joyous prospect of a mind-numbing commute. Although with your "Big Dig" you are already acclimated.

If you can scape together 5 grand, it should do you comfortable until you can find a job.

Umm, no parts of Massachusetts are going to be like Hollywood. But, Boston is a much better city than LA--so don't worry about it. The suburbs are mostly families, so if you want young people I would stay in Boston or Cambridge. Cambridge is fun, and most areas are pretty safe. Like any city, you need to be careful. Also, I hate to break it to you but, Massachusetts in general is an expensive state.

There are many other IT firms, as well. Just do a search on Monster, Careerbuilder, and other job boards. Things in IT are pretty good right now, unlike the early part of the decade. You can pick up a contract-to-hire position that may go perm.

As for moving your stuff, I would definitely let a moving company move it. Sell as much "junk" as you can before moving.

Good luck.

Apply to IT consulting firms - you can live anywhere. Accenture, Deloitte, BearingPoint, and PWC are the big ones...you can interview at your local office and then relocate if you get the job.
