If your computer recognises the modem then it should work without any problem.
What processor are you using?
windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft, so if it doesn't recognise the modem then its unlikely you will be able to get it going

Hmm, that's quite an old PC now...
You would probably be better off upgrading to/buying a new computer, like Windows XP or Windows Vista.
If you can get the modem to work by following instructions from BT, that's great!
Otherwise, you should get a new PC.

You're better off getting a new P.C if you're upgrading to broadband. A windows 98 p.c is simply too slow to handle broadband. I tried it at first but went out and got a brand new comp from P.C World and connected to my Telewest connection and its been fantastic.

Before you spend any money install UBUNTU. It's a free, reliable, up to date operating system. Plus you get all of the software that you will ever need free. It has an excellent starter guide in WIKI.
You can order a CD or download it at:
http://www.ubuntu.com
If you have 256MB of RAM get a full version, if less get XUBUNTU
Also, should ever need additional help you can get it at:
