Its a pre-lenten festivity that has taken place in Trinidad for centuries. It came to our island through French settlers and has been a major part of our culture ever since. Basically as soon as Christmas is over, the Carnival spirt comes out and there's lotsa partying or feteing as we call it! Then on the Monday and Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, costumed revellers hit the streets in different bands, each with a plethora of colourful sections. Some of the more popular bands to play with are Island people, Tribe and Hart's all of which you can find online. Sadly, most of the good costumes are gone already!

If you are a free spirit who is willing to be swept away by music, sun, lovely people and lots of liquor, Trinidad Carnival should not be missed. While it is steeped in the colonial traditions of our country, and has been molded by the influence of the many people that comprise Trinidad, our Carnival is anything but staid. What began centuries ago as a chiefly French festival is now an entire 2 month season of soca music, steel band, massive parties that can go on for 10 hours and competitions for seasoned practitioners as well as kids as young as 2 or 3.
Come and play 'mas in costume, visit the panyards to hear the steel bands perfecting their songs for competition, or just hang out on the streets on the Monday or Tuesday before Ash Wednesday each year. You won't regret it and you will experience a sensation that is truly inclusive of everyone in our multi-racial, multi-religious society.

OK, here it is. You get to Trinidad the Friday before Carnival. Now you can go to a Fete that night or find your butt at the Soca Monarch Fete, "NOW THAT IS FETE." Saturday is kiddies carnival which is the only true mas now. Saturday night is Panorama, steel band, dust, drinking, and more drinking.
After Panorama you take your dirty self to a breakfast party that will finish at 2:00 pm Sunday afternoon. Now go get some rest until 10:00 pm.
Sunday night find yourself at boy scout/girl scout fete in Saint Anns. Fete till 3:00 am and then is down to Jouvet in Port of Spain. Find a steel band section get some mud or oil to put on your skin/clothing and chip through the streets until 9:00 am Monday morning.
Monday afternoon wear a flat slipper or shoe because the balls of your feet will be swoolen. Monday mas till 2:00 am Tuesday.
If you not playing mas then there is no need to go out in the streets until 2:00 pm. Now you drink, drink, drink, and jump up from band to band till 12:00 am.
Mas done. Wednesday is Maracus beach and a bake and shark.
