My son is 20 months old and a few weeks ago he learned that he could take the cushions off the couch and jump onto them. However he missed a few times, no big deal, never even cried.....now in the past week he has been grabbing around his tailbone area and saying "owie" as if something hurts, but he still does everything else fine, walks, jumps runs, sleeps eats and I cant find a bruise or bump or anything, its just a few times a day he will grab and say "owie", This is my 1st child so I dont know if thats common for them to voice these things and then go on about their business, and do I make a DR appt? I mean really what are they going to do about it?

It's possible he did fracture his tailbone, but as you point out, I'm not sure what they can do about it. I would talk to the doctor first and tell him/her what you told us and he/she will let you know how you should proceed.

He's probably just sore from missing the couch, and I wouldn't panic too much - it be different if this happened without cause, but you say it's because he's been jumping off. He might have been doing it when you didn't see, more recently. Or managed to hurt himeslf in some other, creative way. :)

Not all 'owies' are visible - haven't you ever been sore after bumping into something without seeing a physical bruise? I'd not worry about it for a while unless it continues for a long itme later. Then I'd get it checked out.

I have injured my tailbone before... and I know people who have broke it... if it was broke or even badly bruised you would be able to walk without pain... running... no way.. sitting "owie"!!!!

That being said it still bothers me on occasion... if I sit funny or have a big BM...

he may have just bruised it... when I did mine there was no visible bruise...

Trust me if he broke it there would have been major crying and screaming... and he wouldn't have been able to run and jump around anytime soon afterward...

No need for a doc appointment unless he stops being his normal running jumping rough housing self...

This might seem like a funny question, but is he constipated? Kids can hold back if they know something funny is going on down there, and that makes the situation worse. One of my friend's little girls had a problem like that. She ate a lot of prunes and raisin bran and "worked it out."

Of course, you shouldn't really take my advice, you should give your Dr. a call :)

They really can't do anything but he has fractured his Coxia (sp?) It's the last bone in your vertabrae.

it is very painful for awhile and heals on it's own.

Poor little guy.
