Some Neighborhoods in NW DC you should consider:
* have metro nearby...

Geogetown
Glover Park
Tenleytown *
AU Park *
Woodley Park *
Cleveland Park *
Friendship Heights *
Dupont Circle *
Adams Morgan
Foggy Bottom *
U Street *
Kalorama

Logan Circle*
Shaw*

(I put these last two separate because if you are not 'street-wise' to DC I wouldn't recommend those areas are they are kind of transitional areas where redevelopment is underway).

Here is a very good map to show you where those neighborhoods are located

As always, a caveat--you can experience problems in any area of DC if you are not observant and prepared. Know your surroundings and keep alert and aware of what is going on. While most of these neighborhoods are safer than other parts of DC, you can still have problems anywhere in a big city.

It depends on your price range. If money is not an issue, I would check into DuPont Circle; you can walk to downtown/K Street area, there is great nightlife and restaurants, and it is a very safe area. A little further uptown with the same perks and a slightly lower price tag is Woodley Park and Glover Park. I wouldn't live in Adams Morgan because crime is always pretty high there--- not many murders but lots of robberies as it is a major nightclub area and the muggers know everyone's wandering around drunk.

Further uptown and great areas are Friendship Heights and Tenleytown; both have Metro access to get you downtown fast. They're expensive too.

Pretty much anywhere in Northwest DC is good - the areas people have already mentioned are all good. If you don't mind living in a close-in suburb then i would also check out Bethesda or Silver Spring (which is probably cheaper than Bethesda) but they're both on the Red Line of the Metro and are close to downtown DC, and also have downtowns of their own with movie theaters, restaurants, bars, etc... and they're good areas.

There is a baseball stadium opening near South Capitol St. by 2009 and the current "dicey" neighborhoods surrounding the stadium will become the next Camden Yards like in Baltimore.

Take a chance and move into one of those neighborhoods while things remain cheap - you're still close to Metro and a stone's throw away from the "heart" of DC. Otherwise, those neighborhoods will become as expensive as Georgetown within 5 years after the stadium opens.

Northwest is defiantly the best part of town. Good resturants, clubs, and is very safe. It is also extremely expensive. You defiantly don't want to be east of the Anacostia river that is the bad part of town. If Northwest and downtown are too expensive just cross the potomac to Arlington,VA good night life and great restaurants and about 5 minutes to the heart of DC. There are many new condo buildings in northern virginia especially in the Rosslyn and Tyson Corner areas.
