The map I saw on metroairport.com just had a gap between the two and what appeared to be a picture of escalators.

As you mentioned, there is a gap between McNamara Terminal Concourses B & C and Concourse A. You take the escalators down and walk or take the moving sidewalk in the tunnel to the other side. Then take the escalators going up and you'll be in Concourse A.

Passengers has to take the underground tunnel to connect between these concourses because B & C are like a satellite terminal with no above ground connect to Concourse A. It's just like Terminal 2 for United Airlines in Chicago O'Hare airport.
