Ok, first of all, I'm not atheist, I am a Roman Catholic Christian...
So I'm wondering how could a couple, if the man/woman or both were atheists, could get married? I mean, even if they're not in one of world's religions (and even Scientology or cults) and they don't believe in a "higher powerful supreme being" how can they tie the knot?

For many people, religion plays absolutely no part in their lives.

(You could be one of them some day!)

People marry for a variety of reasons, which may include: love or companionship, the formation of a family unit, legitimizing sexual relations and procreation, education and development of offspring, or social and economic stability.

A marriage is often celebrated with a wedding ceremony, which may be performed either by a religious officiator or through a similar government-sanctioned secular process. Marriages are perpetual agreements with legal consequences, terminated only by the death of one party or by formal dissolution processes such as divorce and annulment.

From 2001, the legal concept of marriage has been expanded to include same-sex marriage in five countries and one U.S. state. Civil unions are a separate form of legal union open to couples of the same sex, and they are currently recognized in 24 countries and 6 U.S. states. The legality of such unions vary by region. Like marriages, civil unions are performed and recognized by some religious denominations.

Marriage has unfortunately combined two social aspects from two different fields.

Legal marriage is a contract that carries with it certain legal rights for the partners depending on their location. For example, in the USA, the partner is legally empowered to assume power to decide medical issues for an incapacitated spouse. Many businesses require marriage to conduct certain types of agreements (most notibly: sharing insurance).

Religious marriage is a ritual underwhich the two people acknowledge a pledge to each other for a period or for life before whatever deity they believe in.

Atheists simply practice the legal side of marriage in absentia of the religious aspect.

Sometimes, letting go seems like the easiest thing to do. But think about this: you've invested so much of your time and energy into another person; you've made a solemn promise; and you still know there's love, even if it's hiding underneath the surface. You can be married in a civil union, before a justice of the peace. It is a union between two people. Religion does not need to be a part of it. You can declare your love and commitment to other human beings, and those other people will recognize that.

The concept of marriage is not unique to Christians. It eventually became a Christian institution in Europe. In the U.S., marriage has a religious connotation if both are believers, or otherwise it's just of legal significance.

both my husband and i are roman catholics, we had a beautifull ceromany in our back yard with the justice of the peice, we have been married 20 years and going strong, we are happy and have a wonderfull marriage we are both atheist, we both agreed on one thing we would never ever get married in the church....

both my husband and i DO NOT beleive in the church and we think the bible is story telling brought down for the generations to behave....
my husband and i beleive that as long as we are good to each other and other people and live a life of kindness and goodness then we as people will go wherever anyone goes when they die in the dust the circle of life
i beleive in certain things, ie; we are not alone in this universe, a higher being to me is inside each and everyone of us and how we act in life, i beleive in ghost, and strong intuition....
relegion has brought down countrys - caused wars--in history...
religion tore my mom's family apart when my uncle was molested by a catholic priest, at a young age, and was still forced to go to church on sundays
i have seen so many go to church on sunday after spending a night with a another women / man or spent a night of drinking etc
i have known women beaten by their husbands and stay because of religion and fear of divorce and going to hell
i have seen my dad come to me as a ghost and tell me he was ok after he died he was a atheist
my nephew is gay and was givin a intervention not by our family but by the catholic church, he was very reliogous and enjoyed going to church every sunday, when he became a teenager and relized he was gay they did a intervention to ungay him, its now 10 years past that point he is in a very happy gay relationship today, but how many tears did he shed when the priest told him he was going to hell, and was no longer allowed to be part of the church group---our family supported him, we beleive in happiness and love no matter who or what or where you come from, and im happy to say he will be married in the spring

i could go on forever and forever on this subject, i dont care what religion you are, if you have a good marriage you will be ok as far as the marriage goes

some human beings say "god" solutions prayers in 3 solutions... sure, No, and Wait. So there are 3 possiblities: a million. Your prayer is spoke back the next day. 2.You prayer is spoke back the subsequent week. 3. you're nonetheless waiting for the respond. So somewhat if god somewhat did not anwer our questions, it would desire to nonetheless slot in wait. ALL spoke back prayers are actually not something better than organic accident.

I went to a courthouse. I purchased a marriage license. I paid a fee. I signed the license, as did my spouse and two witnesses. I appeared before a justice of the peace who officially married me and my spouse.

We went out to celebrate.

The end.

uh, it's called a civil union. Why do you need to believe in nonsense to go through a ceremony and file paperwork? Plus you get a tax break so there's incentive right there, and the gifts are cool.

You can't be serious? Civil marriages are the rule not the exception in most west European countries and the divorce rate is no higher than it is for religious marriages. Are you just pretending to be so naive?
