Of course they didn't understand.
It wasn't written by God but by dozens of ignorant bronze age men.
Now I read that back it looks harsh - they might have been the best explanations for the origin of the world that existed at the time, they may have been scholars in their way and open to new ideas - the real ignorance is the people who thousands of years later with much better theories reject reality and continue to belief in the ancient myths because they are somehow 'holy'.

God communicates through culture. That is the only means he has to communicate. How could God have communicated "progressive" items if they did not have the cultural categories or appropaite words in their language to express such?
Plus, what would be the purpose of including these things? God sufficiently has described to us WHO he is and WHAT he wants for our lives. God continues to use culture to communicate to us.
And Remember, the Bible is God's Word but it was written by man, and thus limited to the material man could write or understand.
Regards to Godless Comments:
Well based on the evidence thus far it seems that the texts have been changed very little and most likely resemble very well the original text. When we discovered the Dead Sea Scrolls we found texts hundreds of years older then we had previously and the content was virtually the same. (of course with minor alterations, but overwhelmingly the same) This has also been proved with the discover of the Alexanderian text and so on. That as we find older mss fragements they back up the more recent mss that we have. So most likey our current collection fo Greek and Hebrew mss are pretty similiar to the original.

Actually it predicted quite a few things, especially dealing wiith religion. Take the following for example.
"Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth." 1 Timothy 4:1-3
This verse specifically mentions that denominations will spring up and they will turn away from the true faith. The "forbidding to marry" and "abstain from meats" are specifically talking about the Catholic beliefs. But remember, this letter to Timothy was written nearly 500 years before the Catholic church was created.
Consider the next verse in regards to "science". In the book of Job, the inspired writer in one verse reveals two scientific principles not known to man until much later.
"He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing" (Job. 26:7).
There is a place in the North where no stars exist , which cannot be seen with the naked eye. How did the writer of Job know this? Also, the same verse declares that God hangs the earth on nothing. We know this is true, but we have only known it for about 350 years. God's inspired writer told us over 3000 years ago that the earth is held in place by gravitational forces!
So God's word does not just contain things that were known to man at the time, his word applies to today as much as it did then.

Many people think The Bible is not relevant today but they are wrong. In The Revelation it talks of armies on horses. Most people think that's very outdated because of the modern technology used to fight most wars now. However, horses are being used by the military in Afghanistan because of the terrain. It's amazing that God knew this would happen but man did not. God's Word doesn't have to change just because we think it should.
May God Bless you.

Actually, there are a lot of things written in the Bible that no man knew about. The first question you should ask is "what is the purpose of the Bible?" Is it to describe the future? Or is it Christ?

The original texts resemble other sacred texts of other tribes that were in existence at that time. It was so long ago. There was so much that was not known. They didn't know that it was going to be around this long, and they wouldn't recognize what they wrote in today's Bible. It has been translated, mistranslated, edited, and translated again, so much that it doesn't even resemble the original scriptures. I think that they would have been appalled at the uses, and abuses, to which their efforts have been put.

Jesus replied, "You are permitted to understand the secret about the Kingdom of God. But I am using these stories to conceal everything about it from outsiders, so that the Scriptures might be fulfilled:
`They see what I do,
but they don't perceive its meaning.
They hear my words,
but they don't understand.
So they will not turn from their sins
and be forgiven.'
Mark 4:11,12

People who aren't Christians can't understand these truths from God's Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them because only those who have the Spirit can understand what the Spirit means. We who have the Spirit understand these things, but others can't understand us at all.

the Bible has God's words but changed by who wrote it....it wasnt written when jesus was alive
but there is another holly book wich is the Quran
its God's actual words....no one ever added to it or edited it
the Quran is the last holly book on earth God promissed that he will protect it and be sure no one can ever edit it or change it even if they try...
God knew that His last book "The Quran"was going to stay around forever... thats why there are many scientific facts revealed 14 centuries ago in the Quran only discoverd or proven now
This proves without doubt that the Quran must be the literal word of God, revealed by Him to the Prophet Muhammad , and that the Quran was not authored by Muhammad or by any other human being. This also proves that Muhammad is truly a prophet sent by God. It is beyond reason that anyone fourteen hundred years ago would have known these facts discovered or proven only recently with advanced equipment and sophisticated scientific methods. Some examples follow.
A) The Quran on Human Embryonic Development: http://www.islam-guide.com/ch1-1-a.htm
B)The Quran on mountains:
