same as any church, MONEY and POWER, and a bit of preaching

They believe that the true teachings of Christ were lost in the translation and interpretation of man after the death of the Apostles. This apostasy was stated in the Old Testament. They also believe that it was prophesied that all truth would be revealed and restored in the latter days. This was brought about when God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith after a sincere prayer of wanting to know what church to join. According to Latter Day Saint teachings Joseph was also shown where an ancient record was buried and through the gift of God was able to translate and publish The Book of Mormon as a second witness to the divinity of Jesus Christ. The book od Mormon deals with the teachings of the Savior to the people of the ancient American continents. This also was foretold in the New Testament when Jesus told His Apostles that he had other sheep that he must preach to that were not of this fold (the Hebrews) and that they would also write down his words and that together both books would be a witness of Him. And that my friend is the cliff notes version.

The Church of Latter Day Saints is the correct name for the sect often referred to as "Mormons"

"Mormon is a term used to refer to adherents of the Latter Day Saint movement, and most commonly to the movement's original and largest group, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.[1][2] According to church history, the term is derived from the Book of Mormon, a religious text that Joseph Smith, Jr. translated from purportedly ancient plates containing a supposed history of the early inhabitants of the Americas that was compiled by a prophet called Mormon.[3] Mormons are not Protestants and do not consider themselves part of any larger branch of Christianity, but do consider themselves Christians.

The "story" behind the church of latter day saints started by one man's vision (Joesph Smith)...and it is believed that God gave Joesph Smith these revaluations to start a church. The book of Mormon and revaled to Joesph Smith through the prophet Moroni and also through golden slates (which have never been found nor has there ever been any proof of). Check out these websites and you can discover mormonism and its true beginnings.

It was a religion started by Joseph Smith, a fellow from New York State. He said that he was visited by an angel called Maroni, who gave him the Book of Mormon written on golden tablets. He preached to people that he had been given a new revelation, and gained quite a following. Below is a link to the LDS Church and the wikipedia article, so you can compare the two.

Joseph Smith was not satisfied with what the religions were teaching, so he started his own religion making allowance for having more than one wife which contradicts God's word. The fact that a special seer stone was needed to read what was written on the golden tablets also contradicts the very way God has done things in the past making sure that all were able to read and understand his word, Jesus spoke in parables that the people understood, to past down a new testament that only one person could read with the use of a seer stone is completely out of context with what God does for his people. And the Bible says that God use to send his prophets to his people, but lastly he sent us his Son, showing Jesus was the last to be and his diciples wrote down that message and nothing would be added as stated in Revelation.

This isn't the first question you have asked about the LDS church i.e. the Mormons. Maybe you should look into talking with someone who is part of that religion instead of asking questions on a site that is filled with people of varying opinions and erroneous answers. I say go to the source for the answers. It won't hurt you, in fact you may learn something.

OK, here goes...short form...The Mormons believed that when Christ ascended into Heaven, he came on over here to the USA. Yes, in the days of yore, more than one wife was accepted but that is no more. They are a Christian based religion who believe in being strong and surviving any holocaust, nuclear or whatever, which includes smoking, drinking caffiene based drinks, etc. The Mormons are good people and the richest religion ever. If you belong to their church and pay tithing every month (10 % of your total income) and you need their help to pay your house payment or anything at all, they will help you. They also have the largest food bank in the entire United states as well as being world reknowned for their genealogical databases which are worldwide. They are very good people whom I admire. They even teach their younger couples how to keep each other satisfied in bed. No other religions teach that, eh?

I don't know too much of the teachings, so you should try to learn more elsewhere. But here is what I do know.

The Mormons believe in the Bible. They believe in all the same basic things all Christians do; that Jesus came down and gave His life for our sins.

But the Mormons also believed that Jesus came to America (before the Europeans did so that the Native Americans had not yet heard of Christianity). He left texts for the Native Americans that they were supposed to give to us (European-descended Americans) one day and together we'd all learn about God and His plans.

Originally, the Native Americans were supposed to be nomads from Jerusalem and related to the Israelites. But they were evil and forced out by God and sent away (God was also supposed to have turned their skin to the brown of today to mark them as evil). But the majority were supposed to have repented of their evil ways, and so God forgave them and sent Jesus to leave the Book of Mormon.

After the Europeans came to America, Joseph Smith (the founder of Mormonism and the Church of Latter Day Saints) was supposed to have found the book of Mormon and a stone translator to translate it into English. He wrote down the words of the Book of Mormon for us to learn; and then with those willing to follow Joseph Smith, left for Utah to establish their own colonies and to serve God as they learned it from the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

They believe that Joseph Smith, the church''s founder, was visited by the Archangel Moroni in the early 1800's. Moroni gave him the "correct" interpretation of the Bible as well as some supplemental literature that they consider holy scripture.

It reminds me a lot of the Moslem religion in that Mohamed was supposedly visited by the Angel Gabriel to help him correct "errors" in the Jewish/Christian Bible.

They also believe in a physical, flesh and bones God who was originally human, but earned his right to be God.

You mean the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints?

Here's a quick link to the official church website on some of our basic beliefs. It's a good place to start if your unfamiliar with it.
