National Railway museum (free), allow many hours for this;
York Minster (and some of the other churches);
The Shambles (some great eating places in and near there);
a boat trip (very good if weather's ok);
walk the Walls;
Jorvic Viking museum (it's a subterranean recreation of the original Viking York, including authentic smells);
horse and buggy ride (pick up near the Minster, weather permitting);
the mainline railway station (to see a clean station and trains).

Visited York while in the UK from South Africa - you must go to the York Dungeon, York Minster, The jorvik Museam and the shopping is really nice there! Just to stroll around the city is nice because it is a beautiful place and is facinating to look at - I wish I could be you!

The Shambles is a famous ye olde worlde street with tourist shops
The Jorvik Viking Musuem is good fun but if you're going at the weekend, beware of the queues
Betty's is a must - a famous tea shop with lovely cakes
The Minster is great (but I think you have to pay to get in now)

The York Dungeon is a gruesome display of the past, also the Jorvik Viking Centre is worth seeing.

The Stone Roses bar. Without a doubt the best bar in York. Great staff top music as the name suggests.
