According to the book "The Rules" (which worked for me) ONE YEAR is the limit, then move on. p.s. if he does not ask, you move on, you DO NOT give an ultimatum - if he has to be pressured into asking you, that is not a good thing and a horrible start... if he really cares, he will not want to let go or risk losing you, so he will want to stake his claim and make you his! I read that book and was proposed to 6 months later. I did everything exactly by the book, not even realizing it, but it changed my point of view on relationships and amazingly was very accurate about how men think! It was scary, I laughed at the book when I read it, but it worked - I stopped asking for someone to love me and stopped all chasing, and miraculously, the right man found me, wanted me, and we were married within a year of meeting! I never had a relationship work when I had to ask a man if he cared or if we had a future together. They know it means you care more than they do, that you will keep hanging on. So move on after a year, don't ask for a pity ring!

You can't put a time limit on this. My boyfriend of 5.5 years broke up last month and I am grateful we did not have to go through a divorce! Why do you need a piece of paper and a gold band to prove the two of you are in love anyway? How long should you give a man to pop the question? As long as he needs. Maybe he doesn't want to be married.

Assuming that you're both financially and emotionally stable, old enough to marry (I'd say no younger than mid-20's to find out who you both really are and want out of life), etc., I'd say two years, max. If he's going to ask, he'll ask - or at the very least will have discussed it with you - by then. If it hasn't happened by then, it probably won't, so if marriage is a goal, then that would be time to move on.

I would give a year to start making plans to marry. If we were not married after two years, I would be looking for someone else.

If you want to marry him, ask him yourself. My mom asked my dad and they've been married for 37 years.
