Unfortunately when animals are too aggressive to be treated they often are euthanized rather than let lem continue to suffer. The dog's previous owners clearly ruined the dog and now it is your heart which might break. I'm terribly sorry; I've had this happen often in my career at animal shelters and vet clinics. It is so frustrating to know that if the animal had only been properly socialized he could be safely treated.
The only thing I can suggest is to try calling a country vet or an animal shelter vet as these doctors often have more experience with aggressive dogs.
I really do hope it works out for you, I'm sure you are a sweet person for trying so hard with this dog.

EXERCISE, EXERCISE, EXERCISE, this dog needs to be exercised to the point were he is totally exhausted. When you get him to this point then you want to lay him on his side. This is a submissive position, when you have him here you need to be cautious and do a massage of his entire body. This will prove to him you are not there to hurt him. If at this point he is allowing you to do this then you can attempt to put a muzzle on him. (if needed) You will need some help holding this dog down, eventually he will give in. A dog will give in to a human that is 1) assertive 2) calm. Vets are trained to care for the well being of animals they are not behavior specialist and that is what this dog needs. Good Luck

If sedating him won't work, and a muzzle won't work, and you can't get close enough to use a tranquelizer...
could you instruct the owner to clean his ears or put on a muzzle so you could clean his ears?
Could they go out and run the dog and exhaust him before you come to see him - he'd be to tired to really put up any sort of fight.
The next step would be to put the dog under anesthetic while you clean his ears. Is there another vet who will help the dog maybe?
Good Luck

This dog is just plain dangerous. If the OWNER can't muzzle the dog, there is no use continuing this 'conversation.'
The owner needs to call animal control and have the dog removed from the home. Period.

Sounds like your friend should call a different vet....if you have a humane society in your area, the animal control officer has the tranquiliser equipment. I would contact them first. You could also try what is called a rabies pole, which might help.

Try calling your local rescue society as the owner may be breaking the law in neglecting his sick dog.
Best of luck.

Well if you were able to get close enough to give him pills you should be able to give him a shot to sedate him. If you were really in vetrinary medicine you would know that.

What is wrong with your dog exactly? I think if it's a real major problem, take him to a vet -- one should take care of him
