Make the prison regime a lot tougher so that it serves more as a deterant rather than an occupational hazzard for the career criminal. I once saw a programme on television about the "Glasshouse" which is the military prison in Colchester. The daily life for offenders convicted of a crime whilst serving in HM Forces is a lot tougher than the pampered lifestyle of the civilian criminal. For a start they have to wake up at the crack of dawn for drill practice, after breakfast they then spend the rest of the day polishing and cleaning their barracks ready for a daily inspection. Prisoners were housed six to a room and the room that passed inspection with the highest marks were given access to a radio for one hour a week usually on Sunday night. So there was no access to a TV, Playstation, pool table, etc, etc. And if prisoners stepped out of line their sentences could be extended by the governor and they usually faced further punishment from the Provost Sergeant. Ever seen Bad Lads Army on ITV? The extra punishment they face is similar to that. I also remember the staff at the Glasshouse helping the prisoners to find new direction in life such as enrolling them on training courses in preperation of them being discharged. In short life in the Glasshouse taught the prisoners to be more disciplined and have a lot more respect for others not to mention respect for themselves.

Prisons at the moment are play camps for criminals and they even get paid more compensation then their victims. The justice system is a shambles you can't even defend yourself in your own home these days as criminals have more rights than their victims.
The government needs to make prisons a punishment so that criminals don't want to go there and hence wont re-offend when they are released.
They also need to bring back capital punishment (the death penalty) for Murderers, rapists, paedophiles etc and they must have their human rights revoked and not allowed early release. LIFE SHOULD MEAN LIFE. That will sort out over crowding in prisons.

Overcrowding can be caused by
- Punishment is not a deterrent
- Recidivism by former inmates
- Criminalization of lesser offenses
- Lack of capital punishment
- Lack of lower-security facilities and halfway houses
- Outdated facilities that are labor intensive and not efficient use of space
- Lack of a working parole system
By now, the authorities in charge KNOW what's wrong. They just lack the funding or political clout to change the system.

There is only overcrowding because there aren't enough prisons. Short term, build more prisons, long term, make prison harsher, which should help cut offending, together with measures to build respect for authority in society.

With the certainty of DNA evidence these days i would bring back the death penalty for all convicted child killers, rapist and paedophiles..and maybe some of the other scum infecting the planet.
This will free up more prison spaces for fine dodgers and council tax evaders...not forgetting the motorist.

Send them to Iraq or Afghanistan. Also consider executing them so that their body parts can be reused for good purposes.
How about testing new drugs on prisoners instead of on rats and monkeys? That should get rid of some hard core ones!

Good question.
Firstly those prisoners that are of foreign origin I would deport straight way.
In future anyone committed 100% guilty of murder or any heinious crime would face the death sentence, fullstop!
Investment would be made in the construction or convertion of prison ships or old oil rigs.

Think of your bathtub as your population, the drain as the law, and the septic tank as the prison. Your drain is too large -- make less laws and repeal existing ones (e.g. if a law doesn't have a victim or if the victim is the defendant, repeal it).

Spend more time and money creating better mental health facilities. Instead of punishing people for there disease we could actually assist in treating them.
Although it is easier to lock them up, so we could identify a type of prisoner, lets say all left handed inmates and shoot them. This should free up a cells.

Send them here to Texas. This state executes on a very regular basis. No matter who the governor is, very, very few get a stay of execution. Even George Bush as Governor would not pardon. You do the crime here, you will get the needle.
