Is there any way that I could get a student loan in my own hands? I've got one before but it went right to the school. I need it for books and other expenses for college and the one I attend is $26,000 all together for my degree. I know a lot of people get more than they need and they actually have all the money in their own hands. I need it for transportation, etcetera.. I have a job, and I'm starting another one this Saturday but I'm very low income. How would I go about this, and what bank would be ideal for this? What should I say?

I don't have bad credit or good credit, I've never had anything in my name so I don't have any at all.. and I will have a cosigner that is not a parent. My parents aren't helping me fund my education.

The main thing is I don't want the loan to be automatically transferred to the school. I want to cash the check, if that's what you receive. I only got about $5,000 from the school which I don't have to pay back because it was in grants.. and those were from the school so they automatically went there. I never had anything in my own hands...

Your idea is "not care"? I am to the point where I need food stamps, and I AM employed. This is an opportunity to get some free money, a benefit of going to school. So many people have taken advantage of this and received thousands and thousands of dollars! And yes I'm aware that I'll have to pay this back. When I graduate I will be making enough money to pay it back so I'm not worried about that.

I don't want FASFA or Stafford. The money goes right to them.

I did the FASFA and Stafford in my first semester.. I have to renew FASFA again but I didn't receive any "left over money" and I will do it again but I know I won't get anything back.. I haven't though I need and want to. I would satisfied with the amount in the last answer, I'm not looking to get $30,000 in my hands.. I just want to know how to go about this? I want to get a loan from a bank.

I was in college for 6 years 2yrs at one college and 4 at another and I never had my loans given directly to me. Financial aid only covers so much and your loans cover the rest, this is why they go to the school. Once they get to the school they will take out what ever bill you have with them and if there is any thing left over they will send you a disbursement check. You may want to make sure that you have the max. amount allowed on your loans. I currently have approx. 52K in loans and I would get about 3 K every 3 months from my left over loan money. Also talk to your counselor and they may have some other suggestion for you. I went for the sub and un sub loans that is why I will be paying out the A** for the rest of my life>If you are low income then you NEED FASFA. This is money given by the government that you do not have to pay back and then you will get a bigger offset from your student loans if you dont take FASFA then you are just looking to get the money. I did not work the whole time I was in school and I had a kid to raise and we were just fine living off of the loan money that I got!

Usually student loans amounts are determined by the lender as to how much tuition is per semester/year. I was able to add a few thousand to my loans to cover the cost of books and transportation. You need to make an appointment with the financial advising office at your school and talk to them about increasing your loan amount. Try and get a Federal Stafford Loan. If what you borrow is more than what you owe, you'll get a check for the remainder. I was never able to get more than an extra 2 thousand a year though. I don't recommend going through a bank, as you'll pay much higher interest rates. Did you complete FAFSA through your school? If you are low income, you may qualify for grants and scholarships as well. That's free money you'll never have to pay back.

Fist of all complete a financial aid application FAFSA. You can apply for scholarships, and grants that you don't have to repay. If you want additional money then apply far a loan. The Stafford and the Stafford unsub are great. Your college will choose your lender(bank). good luck

I would call the registar office and see if you will be getting a refund check. This is the way that I got my money in hands. Otherwise, they wait for the mid part of the semester to send it out. With your high cost of tuition, it may be a mute point.

You can get as many student loans as you want as far as I know. Just apply for them. I know people that have gotten $30,000 dollars for a school loan in just 1 year
