I am having a rough time with allergies (they think) with my red nose pit. Does anybody have any good websites or books about pit bulls and their allergies. My poor little one is on and off medication due to her allergies.
NO NEGATIVE ADVISE! I am avid lover of the breed and I just want to read up on what they are prone to be allergic too. Thank You!

They are not sure what types of allergies, that is why I asked if anybody had any good advice, websites or books that could help with the research. I've done the diet change, allergy medication, using medicated shampoo's etc. But she is only getting tempory if any relief.

Check her food. Make sure you're not feeding any by products or corn. Also ensure there is no wheat, wheat is the #1 culprit for skin allergies.

Bathe her in Tegrin shampoo. It's a dandruff shampoo you can buy in a grocery store. It's slightly medicated and is good for dogs who have serious allergies. My Golden Retriever had horrible skin allergies. Dry skin, hot spots, and she would lick her paws till they bled.

I switched her food first then purchased the shampoo. I bathed her about once a month then as it got better I slowed down on the bathing.

You may want to think about getting Linetone also. You can get that at Petco and Petsmart. It has linolaic acid, flaxseed oil, sunflower oil, and Vitamin E to help with the skin.

Good Luck

my pit does not have allergies. but my chow does. and she has it bad. but here this is from a website. Many Pit Bulls are prone to mild skin problems and allergies. We have found that " Lamb & Rice formulas" work best for this breed and prevent skin irritations. The dogs in our program are fed "Nutro Natural Choice" Lamb & Rice formula, or "Diamond" Lamb & Rice Formula. weve tried to change our dogs food and i thinkt hat it is helping a little. and we changed it to lamb and rice. and my chow is going to the doctors on friday and because she has gone to others but they dont know what it is. and weve tried everything to get rid of it but nothing works. we tried medicated baths, allergie pills and liontions and nothing works. and she is almost 8. and she is so miserable.

Allergies are very common in the breed, my experience has been mainly food allergies and grass. One of my rescue dogs had to be on fish and potato food from Purina, but once he found a forever home, they put him on a modified BARF diet, and he is doing great(2 years later). I would recommend a holistic approach, if possible, because the drugs they use to combat allergies are harsh, and I've seen much better results with holistic methods.

Like jenn_a said, it is very common for pit bulls to have allergies, especially to grass. It is really the only main concern with their health.
Something you can try.... Try to find someone who sells honey from your area. You can either let him lick a spoonfull of it or put it in his food. Honey from your area is the only kind that can work.
You can also use Benydryl (sp). Consult your vet on how much to use.

i dont have a pit, but i have a dog with allergies. she's allergic to grass believe it or not.

but it could also be something you're using in your house. what kind of cleaners do you use? try switching them up. and dont use any of those things you sprinkle on the carpet and then vaccuum up.

You didn't specify what kind of allergies. Sorry I can't help. I have 2 pits myself.
