There is no such "disease" as pathological lying. People who do lie pathologically often will be diagnosed with a Personality Disorder, such as Antisocial Personality Disorder.
These are listed in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, 4th edition (DSM IV) used by pschiatrists to categorize mental disorders.
A personality disorder is defined as a persistent maladaptive way of interacting with others. Details at wiki link

Lying is something people do to escape confrontation at the particular moment, although the person usually is aware that it will come back to bite them in the future.
Any blame on a mental issue is denying that they have conscious control over it. He probably lies just to avoid a confrontation with the person he is lying to. He doesn't want to care about the consequence now, because he'll just deal with it later. Problem is, when later comes, suddenly he regrets the lie.
The problem with lying all the time is that eventually you aren't lying, but instead "denying and changing the story to a more desirable one." He tells you what you want to hear, enjoys the peace, and doesn't worry about it. He probably even forgets that he told you the lie. But eventually when you call him on it, he will either give you an empty apology and get angry (because now he feels like it wasn't even his fault - he would take it back if he could, now, because he's in trouble), OR, he will add more lies just to cover the one up, even if the original lie was a very small one.
In short, liars will continue lying in order to keep from getting caught, without realizing that all they're doing is digging deeper into their hole.

The term "pathological liar" is not an official clinical diagnosis however psychiatrists may agree that pathological lying is often the result of a mental disorder or low self-esteem.

Some people have what is called psychopathy or lack of conscience. These people will lie for the sake of lying and have no guilt associated with doing so. There is no "cure" for this and lying is generally a milder form of psychopathy (worst end of the spectrum: serial killers), however it can graduate into other forms of deceit.
Wish you the best.... :)

I think it's a behavioral disorder, not a disease. He probably started doing it as a child, got attention, and now it has become a bad habit. A lot of times liars don't think they're lying because they fully believe their own words.

No,not a disease . It's a sin. Some people get a kick out of lying. They just don't think lying
is wrong. But it is. It can often hurt others.
