It's a type of bacteria often found in the vagina. It can cause systemic infections in people with suppressed immune systems. Cellular division occurs along a single axis in these bacteria, and thus they grow in chains or pairs, thus the name — from Greek streptos, meaning easily bent or twisted, like a chain. Contrast this with staphylococci which divide along multiple axes and generate grape-like clusters of cells.
Can also be strep-throat. Strep throat is caused by streptococcal (strep) bacteria. There are many different strains of strep bacteria, some of which cause more serious illness than others. The type of strep that most commonly infects the throat is called group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus (GABS). Other types that can sometimes infect the throat are groups C and G strep bacteria

Being diagnosed doesn't necessarily mean taht you are "sick" though, you may only be a carrier. Is your immune system deficient due to any other disease processes? Group B Strep (GBS) can cause systemic infections in immune-compromised patients. (ie, on chemo, has leukemia, HIV/AIDS, other chronic medical conditions) I looked around quite a few sites and there were no specific treatment protocols, so it sounds like your doctor is trying anything and everything he can. You may need to be admitted at some point so you can receive IV antibiotics if the infection is worsening. Take care of yourself as best as you can. Eat well, be active as much as possible, reduce stress...do what you can to make it easier for your body to fight this off. In the meanwhile, continue to see your doctor regularly.
