Hi Courtney... because everyone here is located from all over the world consider posting an ad through a free online service such as Petfinder http://www.petfinder.com or your local Craigslist http://www.craigslist.org and look for your state, then nearest city and then under the Community and then subsection Pets. Be sure to ask for a small adoption fee (e.g. $15) to disuade people who are looking for a free pet to sell to research labs, use for dog bait training, snake food or worse mistreatment. Ask prospective adopters that you would like to conduct a home inspection monthly for 3 months to ensure the well-being of the cat as well. You can negotiate the adoption fee if you feel you have found a good home and refund the money after a few months. People scour Craigslist every minute daily so you may find someone pretty quickly.

If you decide to adopt them out yourself, don't give them for free. Unfortunately, there's a lot of creeps out there that want free animals for their own purposes. Usually a $25 adoption fee is fair since you'll be socializing them and the care you're putting in til they're adoptable at 8 weeks.. If you decide to deworm, get shots and do a few other things, $50 is fair too. Shelters generally charge $75 because they neuter/spay the animals. No kill shelters are great if you can find them (make sure they really are because some no kill will still put animals down for a variety of reasons/excuses). Don't dump them at pet stores either.

In the shelter in my town the kittens are always snatched up by new families straight away so I don't think they would be put to sleep unless they were ill or something. I didn't think any shelter would put animals to sleep unless there was a compelling reason, aren't they there to help animals find new homes?

That depends on where you live.
You could try putting an ad in the paper for free kittens, you'll probabaly get a lot of reponses seeing as it is not kitten season, so there is a greater demand then supply.

Try looking at petfinder.com they list a variety of no kill shelters that are close or in your area. There are animal rescue leagues and pet guardian societies that care for animals until someone adopts them.

You could talk to a local pet store and see if they take in kittens. Or, just put word out that you have kittens you are giving away. Good luck!
