I see this all the time, and I just want to get out of my car and knock on their window and ask, "Why are you stopping a full car length or more behind the person in front of you?"
I mean, yes, it's a good idea to leave a few extra feet, so you can turn out of the lane if you need to, or in case a novice driver in front of you accidently puts it in reverse. But you've all seen it! Some people stop a full car length or more behind. There's gotta be a reason they do this. If you are one of those people who do this, please tell us why!

OK. Maybe I wasn't clear because so many people gave answers not pertaining to what I'm talking about. I'm not talking about stopping so I can see the wheels of the guy in front of me. I'm talking a full car length and more. So far that if I wanted to I could drive up beside and pull comfortably in that space between the two cars.
Come on, surely someone rear ending you ain't gonna push you that far forward. If they hit you that hard, I wouldn't care less about the car in front of me because I'd be dead or severely injured.

I thought I was the only person that had that question on my mind! I am crackin up over here because you are so right. I have noticed this and I see it almost every day. I think it's rude during rush hour because everyone's trying to squeeze in and they are wasting space. I would love to get the answer to this.

it dependes on the interstction some i am way behind because i have seen lots of people get rear ended so by staying so far back if i get hit i am less likely to hit the person in front of me. I also drive a sitck and when i am on a big hill i will give a little extra space in hopes the person that gets behind me will do the same just incase i role back

well, its common sense. Just in case, (and this DOES happen.)...if some person behind you gets all confused about their pedals and pushes on the gas instead of the brake, you get rear ended, you have room in front in order to not hit the car ahead of you..... its good practice to always leave a few feet of space.

The reason I do this is because if a car rear ends you there is enough room you do not hit the car in front of you.
To make it safe always look at the back tires in front of you, if you can see the tires and the ground they are touching then you are at a safe distance.

If you have ever been stopped close to the car in front and been rear ended I bet the front of your car was damaged as well, It is indeed good driving practise for some reasons you even answered yourself

Im not attempting to say something, yet when I have pushed by skill of particular aspects of city the site visitors habit is a lot diverse. I have considered individuals force sluggish or wait about 3 seconds after the mild turns eco-friendly to even imagine about going ahead. when they're in action, their velocity is purely sluggish. Come on, searching cool 24/7? supply me smash. yet another element I have talked about is that there are purely going to be some roads on your city which will purely be undesirable customarily. it really is ordinarily by using both the encompassing neighborhoods or both diverse aspects of city that the line connects. for my area i ought to opt to take a subway, that solves maximum if not all driving issues.

I don't get it either - I've actually driven around them and gotten in front of them because our lights here have sensors in the ground, and they don't pull up far enough forward to activate them!!
It is so frustrating sitting at a light and watch it pass through two or three cycles because the @$$ in front isn't pulled far enough ahead!! The light only activates when you're on the sensor people!
Please tell me why too!!

Well, you gave two good reasons. I do it and this is really pushing the safety issue, but what if the car's gas tank blows up?
I don't want my head 10 feet from his gas tank. Besides I just like the extra room. I hate tail gaters.

Most of the times I've seen that it's with older drivers. I assume their depth perception has gone off. I scares the heck out of me, but unless the laws change to require re-testing before a license is renewed, what can we do?

Gee...let's see? Because you're supposed to that's why.
I do it...why? 1) b/c if someone rear ends me I won't hit the car in front of me. 2) b/c if the car in front of me stalls or can't move I can safely go around it w/o hitting it. 3) because people don't know how to drive stick shift vehicles & I dont' want someone rolling back into me. 4) because I don't want to smell their nasty exhaust any more than I have to. 5) because you're supposed to that's why.
