I recently got a new job. I have to travel every other week out of state, and overnight. My wife died a couple of years ago, and i'm raising my 12 year old son all by myself. He stays with a person that I know of. I went for a trip to Conneticut overnight last week. My son stayed with this person for the night at my house. He said that he didn't fall asleep untill 11 at night, when he went to bed at 9. He says that he wants a sleeping aid for when i'm gone. Can anybody tell me if there are any sleeping aids for 12 year olds?

No, no sleeping aids for a 12 year old. He should excersize more to get more tired. He should have a calm done time before bed. He could have a warm drink(chamomile tea is soothing) and light snack during this time. No caffeine drinks at all(including Coke). He may have anxiety while you are gone, but a phone call in the evening could sooth things. He could read till he fell asleep . He could write in a journal his day and his thoughts. 2 hours seems like a lot but if there were something bothering him talking it out might help.

Do you mean sleeping tablets ...they really are not good for a child! Better to give the child a warm bath and some hot milk and a teddy bear to snuggle up to. If the person who watches your child insists or pushes the issue get someone else to look after your child. Drugs are definitely not the answer.

Come on now. THe boy is only 12 yrs old.Not saying your not doing a good job, I"m sure you are, but please dont start that boy on pills. Do you relize how quick he can start relying on something to help him sleep? I was addicted to tylenol pm for three years.I'm begging you not to start him on any of that ****!!Tell him to drink a cup of warm milk, or get him that night time tea. I hear that is real good. Please try that before you go to pills. You both will be in my prayers.

Homeopathy and Bach flowers are great help, as they are all natural stuff, no problems with side effects, or medicines. They can be found at natural/macrobiotic stores. I use them with my 11 yrs old who's sometimes anxious at night.

Great example for some dads... Congratulations !!
