You need to be careful with a Mastiff. You DO NOT want to teach it obiedence that you will regret later on. This dog is going to be around 200 pounds at full adult growth and it does not matter how big you are, if this dog decides to attack or guard as you state, you will not be able to control the dog. They have a much lower center of gravity and that puts them at an advantage over us. It is recommended that you take your mastiff to a puppy training/obiedence class that you attend together. And once the puppy class is over, go to the intermediate class and then the advanced class.

Okay - Great choice of dog. I only wish you mentioned what type of Mastiff you own. I must admit though I love all Mastiff breeds. I guess BullMastiff are my favourie followed by the English Mastiff and then the American Mastiff (although there is not really a difference)
To build muscle you must obtain a Tred Mill. You must also get a back pack for dogs and put weights in there. You could get a sled and get the dog to do a bit of sledding. You must check that he does not have Hip Dysplacia at the vets before doing this.
To Obey is easy, get the dog to sit on command for first four months then try the other commands after this time.
To guard. I would advise that you don't. Mastiffs are naturally good at guarding and will defend you or your home. They are not said to be biters though unless you have a Fila. Most will just get between you and the intruder. However, if pushed these dogs will attack. (Who would mess with a mastiff?)
Your dog will not require guard training, trust me on this.

You need to make sure that your dog is being fed the proper food. Iams or Eukanuba are good brands. We fed our dogs the lamb and rice. Basic commands work fine for a mastiff...you need to be consistant, but they are eager to please. Please do not train your dog to growl or lunge at intruders. They naturally have a tendance to get between you and an intruder. You want a dog that is accepting of people who come into your home when you are there. If they aren't...that just creates an uncomfortable situation when you have guests.
Also....DO NOT run your dog on a treadmill. Especially if its a puppy....it will ruin their joints if they get to much excercise. Just take him for regular walks and he'll be fine.

P. S.- To the other responder who said there is no real difference between an English Mastiff and an American Mastiff...you're wrong. An English mastiff is a pure bred animal...the American mastiff is a mutt that is not recognized by the AKC.

First you'd have to learn how to spell.

Then you can teach your dog to obEy.
