As a "detective" I can say that you don't start at the "bottom of the pile."

Before one is even considered to the investigations division of a department, they must go through considerable training and often training specfic to a certain crime. You have general crimes detectives, narcotics detectives, and computer crimes detectives as an example.

One must also have tenure with the department and the maturity and desire!

Hope you make it ... best wishes!

pretty hard. you have to start out as a 'street cop'....you know, walking beat. you'd have to go through years on the job, reccommendations, pass a detective test (sgt.'s, l.t.'s and cap's have to go through the same thing!) talk to some one in the local police department
