OTR is an acronym for Off-the-Record. It's an encryption algorithm used in Instant Messaging. It mainly allows you to verify the person you're talking to is actually the one you think you're talking to and it prevents third-parties from reading the messages you exchange. A new key is generated every time you initiate a conversation, so even if one key gets compromised, that person won't be able to use it the next time because you will have a different one. OTR is not bound to one specific IM-protocol but works with all of them. There are plugins for some IM programs, other programs like Adium X have integrated OTR directly, so you only have to switch that option on.
