It showed how religions have had to trick people into believing their faith with cheesy parlor tricks like the Staue of the Virgin crying blood, and The Christian churches doors that open up by themselves. Were people REALLY that stupid back then?

I didn't get to watch it unfortunately but I have heard of a couple of the things you mentioned. People weren't really "that stupid" back then, they were "that ignorant". They didn't have any other way to explain the happenings and they were subject to mass hysteria. You know, if you have a crowd of people who each have an IQ of 100 (America's average), the IQ of the crowd is going to be about 75.

I was around when this was news, and as far as I'm concerned, it's a current event, not history. The only difference between the actions of Jim Jones and every other christian group is the mass suicide and the timeline. The Jones cult was only a few years old compared to millennia for all other organized religions, but they went through the same order of events: founding, growth, greed, sexual abuse, physical violence to silence the members, investigation from outside, claims of persecution, and self-fulfulling doomsday scenario. Whether it's the "rapture" or tainted kool-aid, the godbots will do loony things when they're cornered by reality. Just look at Chicken George Bush's lunacy and Israel's nuclear posturing. I wouldn't be surprised if Bu**sh** launches a nuclear weapon on Iraq or Iran to drive up the oil prices for his corporate friends and then blows his own head off with Saddam's pistol (the one he has in his desk, in the Whorehouse - oops, whitehouse) after it detonates. .

Yes I did watch it and found it amazing how they figured out how to do all these things way back then. Religion was different then and I guess they expected the Priests to do something magical when they made an offering. I love those shows.

They still are. Haggard is claiming to be 100% heterosexual and he is going to pursue a career in counseling.

Guess how many evangelicals are going to believe him and line up at his door?

Anyone and I mean ANYONE who deceives is not of God but of the great deceiver...I don't care if they claim to be of God or not...anyone can claim to be a Christian, but only God and that person really know for sure. That is why Jesus said not to keep your eye on man, but to keep your eye on Him...Stop looking for the lie, and seek the truth....Jesus said "I am the truth".
