Start
Run
type in "msconfig"
click the "startup" tab
CTRL+ALT+DEL is useful for stopping programs that are currently running. If you want to stop them from running every time you startup use msconfig. Be careful what you uncheck, though. Things like aim, msim, etc are safe to uncheck, things like RunDLL32 are not.

two things that you can do.
Once you computer boots up, right click on each program that shows up on your system tray, go to preference and uncheck where it says "start at boot up" or "Start when computer turns on".
The other way is, go to run and type the command, "msconfig" Once you are on the configuration screen, go to the tab that says Start up and uncheck the software that you dont want to start when you boot up. Then restart your computer.

part 1: Use MSCONFIG:
From the start menu, click Run..., and inthe box type MSCONFIG, click OK. Choose the application you want to disable at startup.
part 2: Deleting general startup programs:
From start menu, choose All programs -> Startup. On each item you want to delete, right click on them, and delete, and click on "Delete shortcut" when asked.

Either at the Startup or go to each one and disable them (so that they do not start on their own). You may achieve first by going to start > programs > startup. The second can be achieved by going to the program tray and righ clicking on the respective icon.

There are two places to look
Click Start Button,
Click All Programs,
Click Startup,
Delete any entry which you don't want to run at start up
by right clicking entry and selecting delete,
------------------------------------------------------------------------
FOR PROGRAMS NOT LISTED IN START UP
Click Start Button,
Click Run,
Type msconfig,
Click OK,
Click Startup tab,
Disable any unwanted program,
Apply changes,
Click OK,
Then allow a restart,
Warning be very careful what you disable
