For all intents and purposes, Burbank is part the metropolis sprawl that is LA.
Yes, flying to Burbank is a good option if it is cheaper.

First of all, John Wayne Airport is NOT in Burbank, it's in Orange county.
Secondly, it's Los Angeles. We're particular about that.
Burbank is a suburb of LA, located in the San Fernando Valley. It's not really far away from downtown, if that is what you're looking for. However, the traffic is another story.
Usually it's more expensive to fly into Burbank than LAX. But fares can range wildly. Your savings in airfare may be used up in gas and car rental charges.
Consider Long Beach or Ontario, depending on your final destination.

Misinformation abounds!
First, Burbank is its own incorporated city, 10 miles from downtown LA. Yes, it's part of the metro LA area, but most people from Burbank would be insulted if you called it a "suburb of LA".
Second, John Wayne Airport is in ORANGE COUNTY, not Burbank, over 50 miles away. I wonder what that other poster was smoking when he posted.
Depending on where you need to go in LA, Burbank can be closer than LAX. It was certainly closer to my home when I lived in LA (for forty years). If you are going to downtown LA, it would be quicker to go from Burbank (take I-5 south to 110 south). The amount of time to get there depends entirely on traffic. In the morning, it could easily take an hour to get downtoan. The weather is great here, but the traffic stinks. As an alternate, you can take the Metro Rail from the airport to downtown.

I ALWAYS fly out of Burbank rather than LAX. Much smaller and much more mellow... however the answer to your question depends on the day of the week and time of day you're traveling. From Burbank airport you're going to be headed South on the 5 freeway... which could take you 20 minutes at 3 am, say, but could take more than an hour during morning or evening rush hour. Seriously, the 5 is one of the worst freeways in Southern California and can slow to a surreal crawl at times. If you're going to be driving anytime between 7-10am or 4-7pm count on a long, slow crawl.
FYI, you can take the train from Burbank airport to Union Station in downtown LA... the train stops right outside the airport on San Fernando Road.

I've flown into John Wayne airport in Burbank and it's right next to LA. By car, it's maybe an hour from one airport to the other, but from Burbank, driving south, once you cross the big hill you're in Los Angeles.
I guess it would depend on where in LA you need to go, but you should definitely fly into Burbank if it's cheaper.

It all depends on what part of LA you are going to. Burbank is actually a little closer to downtown LA than LAX airport. But it is farther from the west side of LA. Burbank borders on LA. Look at a map.

Burbank is a nice airport -just remember it does not have jetways
so you will have walk down steps to tjhe tramac and walk into the terminal..
plus this is the only airport that have rail connections
which are just outisde the airport (you can either walk or catch a shuttle to the Bob Hope airport station() then you can take either a metrolink or amtrak train into Los Angeles
(hint buy a metrolink ticket from the Ticket Vending manchine
at the station as all metrolink tickets are vaild on any train to
Los Angeles from that airport

Burbank is only 15-20 min. away from downtown L.A. But Los Angeles has many communities and districts and your probably going to a Los Angeles Metro like Beverly Hills or Santa Monica or Century City and driving to those places is only 10-15 min. away.
