I know that mental maturity is measured according to IQ scores, but what exactly is emotional maturity? Often we hear that someone is either "emotionally mature" or "emotionally immature", but what does that mean? How does one determine if someone is emotionally mature?

There is no measure of maturity for emotion. I think that the abiltity to experience and express a wide range of emotions indicates a level of emotional maturity but there is no way to measure that. I think it also has to do withthe ability of a person to regulate his emotions in difficult situations. Great question btw :)

Exactly what it means
On a scale of 1-10 how mature are you.
People that cry and can't understand why a b/f or g/f left them.
The I can't live without him syndrome my life is over.
Or I'll get even or I'll stalk him or how do I get him back.
People need to let go. It's OK to hurt after a relationship is over but the Length of time for moving on (and some never move on) is a factor of maturity.

Constantly worrying about what he/she is doing, is he cheating etc. Being concerned is good, but worrying for no reason is a lack of maturity.
Hoping into bed at 15 because you think you met the only true love of your life is another good example of emotional immaturity.

Until one has experienced a number of relationships (and sometimes the first is the last and it works out) and experienced pain and love and respect of each other, we are all emotionally immature.

An emotionally mature person is a person who has experienced all types of emotions in many different ways, at different times and all at once. An emotionally mature person is, therefore, a person with a lot of life experience. Emotional and physical maturity normally go hand in hand, but not always.

Mental maturity is not based on IQ tests. It is based on rationalization as is with emotional maturity.

IQ stands for Intelligence Quotient which is a form of testing ones level of intelligence. Though, I don't consider it a form of intelligence but more as a form of "knowledge". True intelligence derives from common sense.

For example, as a child, you fall down and scrape your knee. Your first reaction would normally be to cry ad wait for mommy or daddy to come to your rescue, or you would seek them out for that loving nurture. As an adult, you fall and scrape your knee. Will you cry and wait for someone to come to your rescue or run to them for nurturing? I should hope not. The difference is how we handle problems, issues, accidents, mishaps, etc. as an adult compared to how it would be handled as a child. Children do not have the emotional capacity to handle crisis in a logical, rational and mature matter. Adults, er, most adults do.

Another example would be the impact of a broken heart. When a person has their heart broken, should they cry, whine, seek revenge and dwell on the whole ordeal? Again, I should hope not. This is an immature action. As an adult, we must realize this as a part of life and we must carry ourselves with maturity to handle this ordeal. As an adult, we should "rationalize" and "logical" understand the reasons for this ordeal. We then learn from it and move on.
