You have made it rather difficult to answer this as your last sentence is judging us. You say that people who jump to conclusions are the ones who say what gossip is and isnt.
Wrong, judgemental people are not necessarily gossipers.
A judgemental person is someone who labels others such as stereotyping them or putting people in categories etc etc, not necessary through gossip. Judgemental people usually make up their minds about someone without knowing them.
Gossip is talk passed from one to another to another and so forth. Usually after the gossip has gone from its original source to its final destination the whole meaning of the original talk has changed.
Gossip can be negative but can also be positive. Example,
I took my dog a German Shephard to a show last weekend and she came first in the Beginners Agility section. Wow, my instructor a German Shephard Breeder will be so proud.
Now by the time the end of the week came round I found out that It was my Agility Instructor who won first place with his German Shephard. Apparantly it went through about 6 people before my girlfriend came round and said she couldnt understand why i and my dog did not get credit but my instructor did.
Now you can take it two ways, Negative cos the wrong dog was acknowledged. Positive cos now my instructor has had calls for puppies due to HIS success in the showring.
So as you can see gossip...take it with a pinch of salt, if you need calrification GO TO THE SOURCE.
and dont be judgemental about gossipers. If it bugs ya, ignore it because gossipers are just that GOSSIPERS with nothing better to do. Gossip is only detremental if dont INTENTIONALLY

I think it is talking about people that will has no positive result. Talking for the sake of talking about someone in the negative or to spread rumor.
I don't think gossip includes good things, like 'my husband is so sweet, he ...", only bad things like 'my friend spends too much money on ...'.

I define gossip as talking about another person, especially in a mailcious or condescending way. Anything told to me remains with me, as it should. If the person who confided in me about a problem, or even a success, wanted everyone to know then that person should be the one to pass on the news. So anytime you talk about another person, you are gossiping.

I believe that gossip is talking about something that is none of your business or at least none of your business to be talking about to others, whether it's true or not.

Gossip is talking about things that are none of your business to people that are not involved about other people. It doesn't have to be rumors, it can be truth that is nobody else's business.
Gossiping is hurtful and usually is done by people who either want to be the center of attention or want to cause grief to someone else to make themselves feel better or to take the attention off themselves.

If you would be embarrassed to have your converation overheard by the person you're talking about, it's gossip. Talking about YOURSELF isn't gossip.
