I am helping a friend plan a wedding. Included in the ceremony will be a family unity ceremony. Any suggestions on where to search for a nice poem or short essay that talks about the meaning of family?

IT may not be exactly what you are looking for, but I was once at a wedding in which the couple (and their children) completed a unity sand ceremony. The bride and groom each had white or black sand and each child had his/her favorite color. The couple pledged to be good parents and the children pledged to love and respect one another. It was very beautiful, and something that should be part of every family-based wedding ceremony.
