I got my first set off ebay, and still use most of the irons. You can get a decent set from wal-mart, Dick's sporting goods, or even Golf Galaxy, or Golfsmith. You may also want to try to find a local driving range, they usually have rental clubs you can try out and hit a bucket of balls to get the feel of it and then decide if you spend the moeny and effort into this thing called golf. hope this helps.

You are getting a lot of good ideas above. Some would say go to a golf shop and try to get a basic fitting. For example if you are over 6'3" you might need longer clubs than standard. If you have large hands you might benefit from bigger grips. Downside to thrift shops is you might buy something and then find you need to regrip the whole set. Another option if you want new I would look at the men's and women's Nickolaus sets that are avaialable at Costco. Use them, get better and then when it is time to replace it cause you two are heading for a handicap lower than 20, then go invest the money in a good fitting and upgrade. Have Fun!!!!!!

man there is not a thing wrong with walmart or kmart clubs. I started both my sons out with a set for around 100 bucks. They will get the ball in the air and perform well. When u start out you need to work on your swing. Yard sale clubs might be 25 yrs old. Technology has improved so much. Granted walmart and kmart are copies of brand name clubs. But which do u think you will hit better. A 1973 forged blade with a slick grip and a worn out shaft. Or a game improvement club with a new grip and modern shafts. Kinda a no brainer. Sometimes spending 20 dollars is not the bargain that you think it is. If you spend the 100 dollars it might help you become a better golfer far quicker than an old set of clubs. After all you might not like golf. I mean if you dont like to drink beer, smoke cigars, listen and tell dirty jokes, get out in the fresh air for half a day; and even gamble for nickels dimes and quarter's. Plus there is a big mental challenge. Its you against the course. Golf is a game of a lifetime. If you are going to give it a try. Then give yourself a head start but dont spend so much that it would be a hindrance to you finances. Good Luck.

You should start with what is called a "Starters Set" These consist of 3 iron,5 iron, 7 iron, 9 iron Driver, 3 wood & putter. The lowest priced clubs out there are the used clubs people trade in for a better club once they learn the game. Also many companies are available that will build just the clubs that you want for a more reasonable price;example: Golfsmith, Maltby. There are many others R.N.Pry Akron,OH.

If you go to the pro shop at your local golf course they sometimes have used sets that people have traded in, or can put you in touch with someone they know wants to sell their set. E-bay is another option. Or check the classified ads in your local newspaper to see if anyone is advertising a used set for sale.

go to ebay there are loads to suit every pocket or pick some secondhand clubs up at your local golf club. Players trade them in as they improve.

If there is a Play It Again shop near you, they are a good source of used clubs.

if you are just starting, buy a cheap set. try craigslist or go to like big 5 and buy a starter set, should cost you around 100-125. you might find out that you really dont like the game. and you dont want to invest $700+ just to find out that it's really not for you.
