It sounds like the patient is terminally ill (delaying death). And "improving the quality of life" means, doing what ever they can to make the time they have left as good/painless as possible. If I knew what the situation was I could be more specific. Sorry. Hope that helps you out.

to delay death is NOT improving the quality of life of the patient. In fact it is more torture that the family needs to realize. Family members tend to want to hang on till the very last minute not realizing what they are doing to their loved one. The quality of life is much much more important than to try to keep a person alive when it is their time to go. Keeping them comfortable and with dignity till the end is the most humane.

It probably means the person is eventually going to die, and there's not much they can do about it, but they want to make the person as comfortable and free from pain as possible. It sounds like this person might be in hospice care.

The patient should be as comfortable and pain free as possible with pleasant surroundings and live happily to the end.
