Every now and then (maybe once a month) my boxer will start to strain and “gulp” for breath. It’s hard to explain, but it’s almost as though his nose is stuffed up and he’s trying to suck in air though his nose really hard, and he strains with his whole body while sucking in through his nose, then he’ll gulp, then he’ll strain again. This can go on for 5 to 10 min.

Now before I get a lot of people telling me to take him to the vet – I already have an appointment on Saturday.

I want to know, from those of you who have Boxers, if you have ever observed similar behavior in your dogs? And do you know what causes it? Is it nothing but a stuffed up nose and the dog is straining to clear his breathing passage? Allergies maybe? Or is it caused by a physical problem – like a deviated septum in humans?

My boxer dogs have done that before. But, it was when they were drinking water, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it. It didn't go on for 5-10 minutes though. I think that you are doing the right thing by taking him/her to a doctor.

Both of my boxers have done the same thing... one more than the other.. I have taken mine to the vet for the same thing and he couldn't say what was wrong but he was in great shape to not to worry bout it unless he started vomiting etc... I have found he does this about and hr no more after he eats.. really starting to think he didn't digest his food right he does this for a few mins and drinks water and is fine... never gotten sick ... let me know what ur vet says... good luck Amanda

Boxers, bulldogs, boston terriers, pugs, etc have the same problems. They all snort and gasp for air at times because of their snout. The snout is short and pushed in, causing them to be more susecptible to allergens in the air. SOmething that may not be a problem for you may send them into their allery fit. It is not necesarily harmful though.
