My husband is reenlisting and planning on being stationed there. I just wanted to know if there is anything to do around there. What the base is like, weather, etc.
Thanks

Fort we gotcha

5,280 ft on the old parade ground.
It was the buffalo soldiers fort. Fighting apaches and Pancho Villa.
It is located on the plain and foot hills of the Huachuca Mountains. snows in the upper levels of the fort in the beautiful bonnie blink area. Lovely cemetary with 150 yr old graves of soldiers their wives and children with heart wrenching epitaphs on the stones. The old fort still has the original buildings with grand old Victorian era senior officer housing. Deer are often seen wandering through the housing area, whole herds during hunting season. And once a year a bear gets its own MP escort with police cars out of the populated area. That always causes major traffic problems cause you can`t hurt the bears so they just get followed around til they are coasted to leave. Prong horn roam there too.
Sierra Vista is a nice Army town that has grown to quite large in the last decades, 45 thousand. Huachuca city is the little dump town that has always struggled to survive. It chose the wrong gate to establish itself at and the first thing you see when you arrive. However the gate was closed and hasn`t opened in 20 years and you pass right through the town in less than a minute. Its a speed trap too. They got me twice and I knew about it.

The fort has modern very nice housing as well as old houses built in the 40`s and 50`s but pretty with tree lined streets.
It is a full service Fort with Commissary, PX, pools, schools, Regional hospital, airport, etc.
Tombstone, the town to tough to die, is a short drive away with with shoot outs, saloons, dance hall girls.
Bisbee is the old mining town and about 35 min drive. Now populated by aged old miners and aging hippies.
Tucson pop about a million is 45 min away and has everything a very large city would have. Beyond Tucson is Pichaco peak where they annually have the reenactment of the Civil war battle of Picacho Peak. Thats a good visit if the weather holds. Of course AZ has a lot to see, The Grand Canyon, Painted desert, Montezuma`s Castle, Cochise strong hold, etc, etc.
10 minutes away from the fort, to the South East, is Ramsey canyon noted for its hummingbirds.
Horse back riding and stables on the fort.
The Fort is mainly Signal and intell school.
Weather is good. better than the rest of the country for sure. Higher (cooler)and wetter than the rest of the Sonoran desert area. You`ll love the scenery with small mountains popping up out of the prairie/ desert valley. The area geologically is known as the basin range area. So the earths crust is spreading apart and forming valleys where the crust drops and mountains where it doesn`t. Each mountain range has its own eco system with ponderosa pine forests on the highest. Rain valley is the prettiest as you drive west to Sonoita and Elgin, cattle and horse country.
The San Pedro river is east on the other side of Sierra Vista and a protected area with huge cottonwoods along the banks.

There is lots to do.
Its a nice fort and a nice place to live and raise kids. We loved it.
If your husband is E5 or above Bonnie Blink (may be Gatewood now off Burt rd )is the best housing area. isolated up in a canyon with streams and wild life. The old housing area at Jeffords st and Rucker was nice with an old established tree lined neighborhood E5 and below. They also have a bunch of new housing, if you like that, but few trees of course. Google earth Sierra Vista to find Ft Huachuca. Sign up for housing immediately, Don`t wait, you can always turn it down later.

Fort Huachuca is an United States Army installation. It is located in Cochise County, in the Southeastern part of the state of Arizona, approximately 15 miles north of the border with Mexico. The base is bordered by Sierra Vista, located south and east of the base, and Huachuca City, located to the north and west. Its major tenant is the United States Army Intelligence Center. Libby Army Airfield is located on post and shares location with Sierra Vista Municipal Airport; it is on the list of alternate landing locations for the space shuttle, though it has never been used as such.

Fort Huachuca is also the headquarters of Army Military Affiliate Radio System. Other tenant agencies include the Joint Interoperability Test Command and the Electronic Proving Ground.

Cheers.

I've been there once (had to drive from San Diego for a service call). It's an okay place, but very rural. The military base is like any other, for the most part, but the outlying civilian area is very sparse.

It's located in Sierra Vista Arizona (about an hour south of Tuscon). Hot and dry most of the year.. All in all not a bad place..

its hot and dry and ugly. You have about 9 months of summer and it's in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. The only good time is the winter and the rainy months (august when they get the monsoon)

There is nothing to do but drive up to Phoenix or down to Tucson. Or even further down to Nogales, Mexico (good shopping)

Good luck to ya!
