Simple way to look at it. A vet need things done that they do not have time to do. They delegate these things to the Vet Tech. The vet tech cannot get all of them done and delegates them to the vet assistants...which can also be know as the kennel person.

Vet assistant requires no schooling and may usually minimum wage. A REAL vet tech requires college...2-4 years and most states require professional license of vet techs. Clearly, they get payed more.

A vet assistant is usually in-house trained by the veterinarian. A vet technician has two years of schooling and in most states I believe they are licensed. They do usually command a higher salary though someone who has worked for a vet for a long time without the schooling or license may be very well remunerated.

Both must work under the direct supervision of a veterinarian.

Vet Techs are usually certified with school and training. They assist in surgery and pet visits. Assistants aren't certified and aren't allowed into surgery. They can however do daily visits.

At least this is how it was in the veterinary hospitals I worked for. Also Techs do get paid more for their certs and training.
