Mat 13:31 Another parable put he forth unto them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like to a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
Mat 13:32 Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.

Not a who, but a what. The answer is in the verse. In this parable the tree is the Kingdom of Heaven which has grown to a vast size.

I believe he is talking about two different plants. The mustard family is large and diverse and we get several very important plants such as cabbage, mustard greens, collards, turnips, broccoli, cauliflower, and flowers such as nasturtiums. I am not sure of the tree mentioned and have been trying to track that down myself. However, collards can grow up to 6 feet which would be enough to offer protection for birds. It could be that this particular member of the mustard family has been lost over time.

Within the mustard family the size of seeds vary quite a bit. The nasturtium seed is fairly large for a flower seed, but some of the other members are quite small. It is very possible that the particular tree mentioned does have a tiny seed.

Any plant within the mustard family could correctly be called a mustard seed.

The mustard seed is one of the smallest seeds and it represents the smallest amount of faith. Jesus was saying that with the least amount of faith, it can produce the largest amount of growth in the life of a believer and others will find comfort in the strength of that faith.

Yeah, see, here's the thing. Your supposedly-omniscient god told a lie.

If he knew the truly smallest seed, he lied, because it's not the mustard seed.

If he didn't know the truly smallest seed, then his followers lied when they called him god.

Either way you look at it, this silly little example is just one more proof out of many that Jesus and the Apostles had no clue what they were doing.
