It's called friendly fire because it's coming from a friend and not a foe.

Has anyone done an in-depth study of how many Americans got killed by us Brits?

Could be in for a big surprise there.

Main thing about the Yanks is they usually own up when they've made a mistake. They might not tell the whole story, but they're not shy in coming forward to say sorry.
Not sure I can say the same about us Brits. When I was in the Brit Army back then 1957-1965 we were very secretive indeed. Don't think much has changed. Oh yeah! If we didn't have the right 'kit', we could always rely on the Yanks either to lend it or sell it to us.

Not a bad arrangement really. Works anyway.

A famous Battle of Britain [RAF] Spitfire pilot, Raymond Baxter, [sadly no longer with us], once said of the Americans that he had always admired them, since they were the only people who had been able to shoot him down in his Spitfire.

There you go, friendly fire again.

Friendly fire or as we say in the Army a 'Blue on Blue", is when two or more combat units engage in a fire fight trough mistaken identity. This can be from units of your own Army or Allied forces.

The ones that are supposed to kill the innocent Iraqis who offended no one but Bush, which eventually landed on some British follies who were there without knowing why. I am sure those folks would still be asking why they had to die for such cause.

Friendly fire is just an excuse used to cover the incompetence of Soldiers who can't tell the difference between an enemy and allies.
The Americans are particularly prone to making these mistakes as anyone who has served in conflicts with them will tell you. The latest reports are not a great surprise to me and my family! I just wonder how many more have been successfully covered up!

Friendly fire is when one idiot screws up big time and make a mistake. It is deliberate (not hostile) and careless.

Know the latest case in the news right now? Did you read the flight transcript?

It's here:
http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/02/06/video.transcript/index.html

That idiot POPOV36 keeps on saying that the orange panels are rockets. Assumptions are deadly in combat and once you fire that missile or gun, it's out of your hands.

That's why one of Pvt. Murphy's laws is "Friendly fire... isn't"

My (infantry) neighbor had a much shorter version of this list.
