A psychiatrist is an MD and can prescribe medications.

Psychiatrists earned an MD....so they can prescribe medication.
Psychologists DID NOT do as well in college...so they didn't earn the MD....and so they CANNOT prescribe. Instead, they sell "alternative treatments" on info-mercials and regularly poo-poo the pharmaceutical industry.

To my understanding one is able to prescribe drugs, the other one is not.
