Good question! I am from cold country and this always happens to me.

I have given it some thought, and my best guess is it has to do with the size/shape of your eyes.

You probably have big 'bedroom' eyes, as opposed to smaller or squinty eyes where the lids cover most of them.

So, simply stated, the more area exposed to the elements the more watering and so on.

The only explanation could be you have kept the water in a closed airtight bottle and strong enough it couldn't burst and withstood the pressure that was created while freezing. Since the water at a higher pressure it decreases the freezing point and couldn't freeze. When you open it the water expands thus increasing the freezing point and forms slush.

ah this has nothing to do with being new to the north.. I was born in the cold climate and lived here my life.. but my eyes always water also.

It's only because of the cold air drying out your eyes.. Next time put eye moisturisers (there are visine formulas out there) and voila! no more tears in the cold!

I am quite sure.. during the pollen season.. you'll get teary eyed..
