Their purpose is one last ditch effort to show the world God's increasing anger towards an "untoward", sinful, unrepentant generation. After each one, man is still given a small space in which to repent, but by and large, he doesn't, so on to the next scroll/vial/trumpet!

There are many interpretations,
the one bible i have teaches its time periods, like the before the temple fell 70ad, then to the fall of roman empire, then dark ages, then prodestant reformation, then the time of fundamentalists, then modern times before return of christ,
another from a woman on my train, is its types of churches, like the literal interpretation chuch, the liberal church, etc.
ultimately i read it and find it disturbing, and believe it to be a battle plan against rome
