I think it's an excellent excuse!!!! If there were more parents like you, we would be much better off with our young people...Tell the school to pound sand if they don't like it!!! Wish her a Happy Birthday from the Y/A Team!!!!!

I would imagine it's not an excusable absence. I have heard of some companies allowing employees the day of their birthdays off, but this is not the norm and I believe many schools would frown on that. I remember in high school, my mom nearly ruined my perfect attendance by leaving for Florida a day before Christmas break started, however, 20 below temperatures forced school to cancel.

Well, Happy 18th Birthday!!! At my son's school, the absence is excused if a note is sent in by the parent the next day. You don't have to state why she was absent. I usually write, Please excuse my son's absence from school Tuesday, Feb...... If you have any questions, please call me at ........ and sign it. I've never gotten a call and all his absences are excused. I don't think it any of their business why there were out as long as they know I'm aware he missed school. My understanding is that if it's unexcused absence the child can't make up the work. I consider unexcused absence to be "skipping school". Have fun and don't worry. Good Luck!

No, it's not an excusable absence, but... she did turn 18, and lunch and a shopping spree sounds fun!! I'm sure that if she doesn't have outstanding absences, she will be fine. Missing one day of school isn't going to ruin her... have fun, and have a great day! Happy 18th birthday!!!

hell yea! i bunked off on my 18th, got drunk and passed out in the middle of a road! oh those were the days....and if u kept her home from school then u kno that she's not going to be an idiot like i was on mine. plus they should understand, 18th's are very special and only happen once, if they don't then sod 'em, there's not alot they can do really. if they expell her (doubt they would) u can appeal it and it'd most likely be over ruled and she coould go back

oh and tell her Happy Birthday

Unfourtanely, it is not excuseable. I asked the school when my daughter turned 8 yrs old...I sent her in with a sick note the next day...They only turn 18 once..it is just fine...have a blast today and happy birthday to your daughter

uh, no not an excusable absence. i was not excused from school when i turned 18. i had to go and i would have been in trouble from parents and school if i didn't go. i don't think you should do that, but it sounds like you are doing it anyway. wait til after she gets out of school for the day or wait til the weekend.

Yes, this day only comes once in a young adults life, it sounds as though you've found an excellent way to welcome your daughter as an adult. In fact as an adult she herself may excuse herself but I expect she is in the later part of her senior year and will not want to miss out on to much. Of course you did not say she was celebrating her birthday but was sick ...right?

No that is not excusable! They don't care...! If she has the days to spare though then i don't see a problem whit it!!

I wish my parents would have let me stay out of school when i was 18!!

Probably not, but at 18 unless she has been chronically absent from school, I don't think they are going to make a big deal about it at the school.
