" And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.
For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.
And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.
For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
All these are the beginning of sorrows...."

Read the rest of the chapter....also Luke 21....also Mark 13.
Remember as well these were questions about 3 things:
The "things" were the things Jesus spoke about when he spoke about the destruction of the Jewish temple. The second issue was the sign of (not coming) but more properly rendered from the greek, the sign of thy invisible presence. And the question was about the joint conclusion of the order of things.
Jesus answer was concerning all three of these events which were all to be future.
The signs Jesus gave were to be composite. A group of outstanding events that would put the whole earth into a critical condition. These signs have been apparent now for some time, and are as if a package has been delivered to earth and opened. This package included such things as world wars and terrible pestilence such as the spanish flu and more substantial earthquakes than have ever occured before during man's history in a concentrated time frame.
Read 2Tim 3:1-5 to see how peoples attitudes are, and also see how the ride of the 4 horsemen of the Apocalypse coincide with the beginning of the "presence" of the Lord. (Rev 6:2-8)

Jesus answered: " Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Messiah', and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end it still to come. Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. Mat 24 : 4-8
Later on in this chapter,Christ goes on to say " ...and this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations and then the end will come. " (v 14)
v 29: " the sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky and the heavenly bodies will be shaken."
v 30-31 : " At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky and all the peoples of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, ....."
v 36 : ..." But about that day or hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven nor the Son, but only the Father."
v 42: "Therefore keep watch because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. ...(44) So you also must be ready because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect Him."

when shall these things be?
Mat 24:36 But of that day and hour knoweth no [man], no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only.
and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?
Mat 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.
Mat 24:10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.
Mat 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
Mat 24:12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.
Mat 24:13 But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.
Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

One will be the destruction of Jerusalem. The time between Christ's first and second coming will be characterized by false christs and prophets along with political upheavals and natural disasters. These are the beginning of sorrows, but not necessarily their end. During this time the gospel will be preached everywhere.

In ancient Greece the gods possessed supernatural powers over human life but this power was limited by a concept of fate. They were in charge of but not equal to the natural forces. Gods were not considered omnipresent, omniscient or omnipotent yet they could reveal the future to humanity and divination was a central aspect of religious life.
