i work in a school system and we have people that come in a talk to the children. the younger kids, kinder to 2nd grade, do not talk about drugs. they have the "touch bear" that comes in and talks to them about appropriate touches. we started drug education in 3rd grade this year. they talked about the different types of alcohol and tobacco, but no hard drugs.

Yes, it is appropriate. I was a Juvenile Probation Officer, and kids as young as 9 were on my caseload for drugs, arson, and sex offenses! Children even younger were involved with these things too, but too young to go through the court system, so child protective services dealt with them. Your child/ren will be exposed, and it could be soon.
There are many good websites out there that help teach parents how to approach issues like smoking, drugs, and alcohol (technicaly, those are all drugs, by the way.)

Most importantly, remember that YOU set the example.

asap!! Kids as young as 10 drink and do drugs. when I see something on tv about the effects of drugs and alcohol i have my 8 yr old come watch it. Shows like life in the er are good to show them what can happen when you drink and drive. I would say around 7-8 is a good time to start. It's ok to scare about this, you need to to keep them safe.

At 5,6, & 7 you don't really have to have a long conversation about it. Just be sure to let them know that drugs and alcohol are bad for you. If you drink you should be very responsible about it and let your kids know that it isn't for children and that one should never drink and drive. Let them know that you should only take medicine that the doctor or your parent tell you you should take. Ask at your kids school. Most shools have drug awareness week where they talk about saying no to drugs and alcohol.

Our surburban public school started programs in kindergarten. They talk about it every year with police assemblies, etc. My daughter is 9 and just won an essay on why you shouldn't use drugs. It's never to early. Point it out on TV. When watching full house, talk about how Stephanie really made a mistake by using drugs when she got older and now she goes everywhere to tell people how sick they make you. There are tons of opportunities. Good Luck!

sure you can. kids in today's society are doing drugs at an earlier age all the time. the sooner you teach them not to do this the better off they will be. i used to work in a child care program that was run out of a school and i had 9 and 10 year olds there talking about smoking pot and drinking. pathetic i know but it does happen.

As scary as it seems - there are kids this young exposed to things like this. I would give the basic "don't take anything from people you don't know" for starters at 5 years old. By 6 or 7, you can start with the "there are bad things in this world and people might want to give them to you".

That'sa tough but good question. my little brother is 9 and already knows about some of that stuff and since he lives ina big family he gets told it all of the time by his much older brothers and sisters. it is hard. Kids do start young and people forget. iwa s 12 when i first got drunk and i do regret doind thing sliek that in my past but it doesn't change anything. Everyone else my age was doing it too. i think about 7 would be a good age

Do it as soon as possible. I have an 8 year old and I am amazed at the things the kids in school tell him. So we have had to have a lot of talks already that I though I could wait a few more years on.

You make frequent casual comments about your attitude, especially when you see smoking or drinking or references to drug use on television, so that it's a natural part of their everyday experience, the same as you do with sex ed. All ages are appropriate for the subject, it's just the content that varies according to their age and their curiosity.
