I remember somewhere that says you can't put "required" on an invitation for dress code. This is for a corporation evening awards banquet at a hotel for over 200 people. Can someone please send the link/source for this rule -- Miss Manners, Emily Post??????

It's like the sign we've all seen: "No shirt, no shoes, no service." There are still restaurants that require "gentlemen" to wear a jacket and tie to be seated. Yes. They can make dress requirements....For men and women.

Black tie implies that the recipient of the invite is on notice that they are to be attending a formal affair.

There's no need for the "required". Black tie sums it all up nicely, and no one in their right mind will come dressed in any other way...

Maybe it's a breach of etiquitte to put "required" on the invite, but show up in improper dress and see how comfortable you feel.
ALSO, SOME VENUES require specific dress code.

there's no reason why you cant put "required" on the invite...I've seen it on a few invites, plus I've also seen it handled like : "Black tie only", "evening dress only", "business dress only" (that means jacket and tie)..."attire is summer casual", etc. stuff like that.

If it's a formal event, you certainly can put "Black Tie" on the invitation.

If you were to state, "Suggested Attire" or even, "Recommended Attire, I think that this should alleviate anyone from running to their lawyers for being asked to dress appropriately.
